Increasing sales, reducing operational costs and enhancing the shopping experience are three major areas that retailers focus their attention on in order to impact the bottom line. As energy prices continue to soar there is increasing pressure on retailers to reduce consumption (and carbon emissions) through improved processes and new technology. Wouldn’t it be good if energy reducing technology could also extend product shelf life and reduce further the spoilage of fresh produce in particular? If you also want to enhance the shopping ambiance, you have the makings of a complex set of problems. Migros, the Swiss retail chain, has determined that the right lighting can help shoppers by lighting products better, and reducing spoilage, while also reducing energy consumption. Migros has just completed the installation of the latest LED lighting technology in two of its Zurich stores. The LED lighting system developed in Europe by NuaLight Ltd was designed to work as a retrofit solution to existing Multi Deck refrigerated and Reach-In glass door freezer cases.
The lighting system developed by NuaLight generates no ultraviolet or infra-red radiation, both of which contribute to the rate of degradation of fresh produce in display cases. Other significant design features of this lighting system include a warm lighting colour temperature of 3500°K and low power consumption per shelf. Finally, replacing fluorescent tubes in display cases with LED lighting halves the energy bill. Commenting on the installations, head of store design Vladimir Aguilar said “Migros is committed to introducing environmentally-friendly innovations when they benefit our customers and improve our business. This NuaLight technology offers Migros an opportunity to reduce its energy running costs while improving the lighting levels and shopping environment to enhance the shopping experience. This lighting system will have a very beneficial impact on the shelf life of the produce displayed in these cases and will reduce spoilage”. Liam Kelly, Managing Director of NuaLight, said “This is an exciting project with Migros. We have developed this product so as to make the benefits of recent advances in illumination technology available to the retail industry. It is terrific to see Migros confirm our expectations, and we expect a rapid adoption of this green and cost-reducing technology. For more information on Migros contact Vladimir Aguilar. NuaLight is based in Ireland, and its business is advanced LED-based lighting solutions for the display case industry. The company was first-to-market with LED luminaires designed for temperature-controlled display cases, and were winners in Lightfair International with CryoLED™ luminaires. The NuaLight product portfolio is specifically developed to deliver cost-effective illumination to supermarket owners.
